Dear WalNUT friends,

This is the final newsletter from the WalNUT project. Over the past years, we have achieved significant milestones in advancing wastewater cycles for nutrient recovery. Through the successful operation of our five pilot plants and extensive field trials, we have achieved impactful results and published groundbreaking work. WalNUT has laid a strong foundation for continued innovation and further improvements in this important field.

In this edition, we are pleased to share our latest results and revisit the highlights of the WalNUT final event — celebrating our achievements, reflecting on key outcomes, and looking ahead to the next steps that will build on the project’s legacy. You will also find a dedicated pageflow guiding you through the project’s journey and main impacts, as well as the publication of the 54 EIP abstracts, showcasing the breadth of innovation and knowledge generated throughout WalNUT.

Last but not least, the final episode of the “A Chat with WalNUT” video series has been released. This edition showcases the contribution of NTUA to the project and presents its pilot activities and results.

As we conclude this journey, we would like to sincerely thank all partners, stakeholders, supporters, and members of our community who have followed and contributed to WalNUT. Your engagement, collaboration, and trust have been essential to the project’s success.

Although this newsletter marks the official end of WalNUT, the work does not stop here. The knowledge generated, the partnerships established, and the solutions demonstrated will continue to inspire progress toward more sustainable and circular nutrient management systems.

The WalNUT Team

We invite you to explore our dedicated WalNUT pageflow — an interactive journey through the project’s key achievements, innovations, pilot activities, and overall impact. Designed to provide a clear and engaging overview, the pageflow brings together results, visuals, and highlights in one dynamic experience.

Explore, share, and rediscover how WalNUT has contributed to advancing nutrient recovery and circular solutions in wastewater management.

A key outcome of WalNUT is the publication of 54 EIP abstracts, capturing the innovative solutions, practical experiences, and knowledge generated throughout the project. These abstracts reflect the diversity of approaches tested across our pilot plants and highlight the tangible progress made toward sustainable nutrient recovery.

Discover the abstracts and explore the innovations shaping the future of circular nutrient management!

In the last episode of the series, Maria Avramidi and Maria Kyriazi from NTUA, explain how the team recovers valuable salts from brine generated during seawater desalination.

The WalNUT Final Event was a full day of exchange, reflection, and celebration, bringing together partners, European Commission representatives, and fellow EU projects. The day began with a warm welcome and an agenda overview by Francisco Corona (CARTIF -project coordinator) and Michael Wilhelm Schaeffer (REA - Policy Officer), setting the stage for a discussion on WalNUT’s legacy beyond the project.

Attendees explored insights into the project’s vision, pilot plants, and key outcomes, followed by lively debates featuring the project’s partners.

The event concluded with a session on synergies with fellow EU projects such as FertiCovery, Nenuphar, Nutribudget, Greenhood, and Landfeed, followed by closing remarks and a farewell aperitif celebrating the project’s achievements.

WalNUT’s Final Event not only celebrated the project’s successful journey but also highlighted the lasting impact of its innovations, partnerships, and knowledge. We hope that WalNUT’s contribution will continue to inspire the next generation of sustainable and circular nutrient management initiatives.

Thank you all for your continued support and dedication!
