This parallel session represents a key opportunity to showcase the WalNUT project's technological advancements, facilitate knowledge exchange, and strengthen dialogue between science, industry, and policy in the European context of circular economy and nutrient management.

As part of the 12th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management (CYPRUS 2025) taking place on Thursday, 26 June 2025, the WalNUT project will host a dedicated technical session titled “Promoting a circular model for nutrient recovery from wastewater to produce sustainable bio-based fertilisers”. This session will focus on the valorisation of wastewater for the production of sustainable bio-based fertilisers. Moreover, it aims to showcase the progress made within the project, while encouraging knowledge exchange with other initiatives working in this field.

The session will kick off with an introduction by Francisco Corona (Researcher in the Circular Economy Area at Fundación Cartif and Coordinator of the WalNUT project), who will provide a general overview of the project, including its objectives and expected outcomes.

Following this, partners from WalNUT consortium will present a series of case studies from selected project pilots, illustrating the technologies and solutions developed within the project: Maria Kyriazi (NTUA) will discuss the selective crystallisation of magnesium and potassium, Ferdinando Burgoa (Cartif) will explain the use of hybrid microalgae cultivation systems, Bart Saerens (Aquafin) will address adsorption and ion exchange processes, and Alicia González (CETAQUA) will describe the use of membranes for recovering ammonium salts.

The session will then explore the agronomic study carried out with the bio-based fertilisers produced in each pilot. Ivona Sigurnjak (Aquafin) will present the substitution potential of bio-based fertilisers derived from wastewater, and Massimo Pugliese (University of Turin) will discuss opportunities and challenges for their application in horticultural crops. Panos Papazoglou-Karachontzitis (University of Copenhagen) will then present the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the implemented technologies, followed by Isabel González (Itacyl) sharing policy and regulatory recommendations gathered in a White Book currently being developed within the project framework to facilitate the adoption of these bio-based fertilisers.

To close the session, Maria Avramidi (NTUA) will present the WalNUT Nutrient Platform, after which various oral contributions from related projects and technologies in the field of nutrient recovery from wastewater streams will be delivered.
