The WalNUT Project has released its Best Practice Book (BPB), a harmonised guide for researchers, industry, farmers, and policymakers on bio-based fertilisers (BBFs) derived from wastewater, algae, and mineral recovery processes.

Nutrient recycling WalNUT project will present its findings on 5 February 2026 (09:00–17:30) at the Representation of the European Region Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino, Rue de Pascale 45–47, Brussels.

Europe’s dependence on imported nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is both a strategic risk and a climate burden. In Spain, microalgae are being used to extract these nutrients directly from food-industry wastewater. Could this be the breakthrough that finally puts home-grown bio-fertilisers on an equal footing with synthetic ones?
Take our survey and contribute to raise Nutrient Recovery awareness. Help us overcome lock-ins and barriers in the deployment of Nutrient Recovery technologies in Waste Water treatment facilities and promote the replacement of mineral fertilisers with bio-based ones
