Bio-Based Fertilisers: a new resource for greener growth in agriculture – Save the date!

Farmers are increasingly concerned about the high cost of mineral fertilisers, which are often imported from outside the EU, lose effectiveness over time, and can deplete soil health. Bio-Based Fertilisers (BBFs) derived from wastewater are emerging as a sustainable alternative. They can protect soil health and biodiversity, reduce waste, be produced within the EU, and support European farmers in moving towards a truly circular economy in agriculture. The EU anticipates that nutrient recovery from waste streams will be a key driver of the transition to a circular bio-based economy, with bio-waste potentially replacing up to 30% of currently used mineral fertilisers.

The webinar on January 14, 2026, will provide an in-depth analysis of the advantages and challenges of BBFs, covering technical aspects, potential benefits, and socio-economic barriers to widespread adoption. Drawing on the WalNUT project’s White Paper, “Green Growth: From Wastewaters to Bio-Based Fertilisers”, the session will feature the project’s researchers alongside external experts, discussing seven key recommendations aimed at overcoming barriers and promoting the adoption of BBFs.
