On May 8, a successful demonstration day took place at Inagro, bringing together stakeholders and researchers to explore advancements in circular fertilisers.
Organised by Inagro in collaboration with the RE-Source Lab of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering UGent and VCM, the event focused on innovative fertilisers enriched with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), derived from treated sources such as animal manure and water purification streams.
The afternoon program featured insightful presentations on key topics, including:
- The process of mixing circular fertilisers.
- The application of ammonium-loaded zeolites as slow-release nitrogen sources.
- Insights and challenges from RENURE fertilisation within the animal standard (OG ReMestV).
- Benefits of circular fertilisers.
- The use of constructed wetlands as a solution to reduce nitrate levels in water streams.
- Ongoing field trials using carbon-rich microbial soil improvers based on insect manure and struvite.
The day concluded with a guided visit to the trial fields, where participants observed first-hand the application techniques and early results of the circular fertilisers under real-world conditions. The session encouraged lively discussion, with many questions from attendees reflecting growing interest in sustainable soil management and nutrient recycling.
This demonstration day exemplified the WalNUT project’s commitment to advancing innovative, environmentally friendly fertilisation solutions and highlighted the value of collaboration between research institutions and practical stakeholders in the field.
